Here is a checklist of policies and procedures to have in place before the end of the organization’s tax year.  Most policies are on the NFP sample policies tab:

1. Conflict of interest policy and enforcement procedure.

2. Whistleblower protection policy.

3. Document retention and destruction policy.

4. Expense reimbursement and substantiation policy.
 
5. Compensation review process including review and approval by independent persons, comparability data and contemporaneous substantiation of decisions.

6. Policy on activities of chapters and affiliates (if applicable).

7. Joint venture policy (if applicable).

8. Process for board of directors to review the Form 990 before filing.
